Almost serendipitous was the “discovery” of the towns as summer getaways. Trains
chugging out of Chicago became known as the “Fisherman's Special” and “Northwoods

hardy country doctor early in the 20th century. Trying to raise funds for a hospital, New-
comb came up with an idea to have the township's schoolchildren solicit penny donations,
initiating what became known as the “Million Penny Campaign.” Enter that newbie televi-
sion and the world was galvanized—more than $20 million was raised.
