east as Rustic Road 60, eleven gorgeous miles of canopies of trees, lakes, an old logging
site's buildings, and a sawmill at the east end in Star Lake.
Dirt-cheap mom-and-pop operations to cushier condo-esque digs line the surrounding
20-odd lakes. Here's a tip: Trout Lake, the largest and deepest in the county, is almost
wholly owned by the state, so shoreline clutter is kept to a minimum. Peruse the very few
local options there for solitude.
A bit rustic but comfy and charming (I love how they call themselves a “C&B”—cabin
and breakfast), the Evergreen Lodge (6235 Evergreen Ln., 715/385-2132,
www.evergreenlodgewi.com , $650-1,500 weekly) is on Little Crooked Lake. Very cozy
(some updated, some not, it seems) housekeeping cabins are available, sleeping up to six
people, with quite reasonable high-season rates.
There's nothing better than camping near Boulder Junction.
Intownandofferingdailyrates,the Acorn Lodge (10370MainSt.,715/385-2150,from
$100) is new and superb. There are lots of extras included, and the staff is very helpful.
