Trails spiderweb around Laona. Minor trails include the
Halley Creek Bird Trail,

Highway H east of Laona via Forest Road 2136, a one-miler traversing four distinct habit-
ats; the
Knowles Creek Interpretive Trail
(east of Wabeno on Hwy. C) is less than a mile
along a 200-acre wetlands impoundment with viewing platforms.

The only trail in this district for skiers and bikers in addition to hikers is the
Ed's Lake
National Recreation Trail,
via Highway W, a six-miler following old railroad grades.
One section on the Peshtigo River nearby is prime for novice to experienced paddlers:
It starts two miles northwest of Cavour off WIS 139 and ends at the Cavour CCC bridge, a
trip of about 7.5 miles. After this it can be downright dangerous.

Wolf River State Trail
from Crandon to White Lake in Langlade

Camping
The largest and most popular of the district's five campgrounds is secluded
Laura Lake

Along WIS 32 near Hiles, tiny
Pine Lake
(May-Oct., $12) lies on the sandy shore of
one of the forest's largest lakes.
Southwest of Wabeno, along WIS 52, isolated
Ada Lake
(May.-Oct., $12) is a peaceful
campgroundof20sites,asis
Bear Lake
(May-Nov.,$12)andbothhavegoodtroutfishing;
the latter offers good walk-in sites and great views.
Information
The
Laona Ranger Station
(4978 WIS 8 W., Laona, 715/674-4481) is west along WIS 8.
Phelps
About the only community of any size in the Eagle River District is Phelps, which offers,
in this author's humble opinion, the best community lake view in the forest.
