You may want to pay some respects, then. The once-majestic MacArthur Pine (west of
Newald off Forest Rd. 2167) was a 420-year-old white pine that narrowly sidestepped the
buzzsaws but couldn't escape fire. Once the tallest of its kind in the world at more than 175
feet, it boasted a 17-foot circumference and 7,500 board feet of lumber. In 2001 the tree
succumbed to a suspicious fire. Many do still come.
West of Laona near Crandon is the heart of the Forest County Potawatomi Native
American tribe (Neshnabek, or “original people,” is what they call themselves; visit
