Copper Culture State Park
(920/826-7304) lies on the north bank of the Oconto River.
Thesitehasyielded45ceremonialburialsitesfrom4,500yearsago,duringtheOldCopper
period. The park is quite understated (show up in winter and you'll probably be alone) and
contains a minuscule museum, open weekends in summer.
At the corner of Chicago and Main Streets is the first church ever built by the Christian
Science religion.

, 10am-4:30pm daily June-Oct. 8—the
fire's anniversary, free). The museum is rather Spartan—scant objects survived the furnace
heat—but as such is quite a powerful encapsulation of the grim 1871 Peshtigo fire. A few
pictures in particular offer a powerful look at the tragedy. There's a somber cemetery adja-
cent, in which several hundred of the victims are interred.
