Tigerton was also the home of Wisconsin's first antigovernment militia, the Posse
Comitatus, who made some waves in the early 1980s before retreating into obscurity after
several of its leaders were jailed. An important thing to remember is that these folks have
always been around.
Festivals and Events
Every August, Shawano hosts three days of fiddlin' and pickin' during the
Folk Festival

at Mielke Theater and Park. Featured in prior years have been na-
tional folk acts, along with such diverse activities as Japanese
koto
and tea ceremonies.
Recreation
The
Mountain Bay Trail
is a 65-mile multiuse trail connecting Green Bay, Shawano, and
Wausau. It's a grand trail and leads to numerous other trails. Ditto with the
Wiouwash
Trail,
which intersects with the Mountain Bay Trail in Eland.
Accommodations
Most of Shawano is classic Wisconsin rustic-lodging country—cabins and cottages that
are clean but very, very simple. Rates vary: You can find a cabin for four folks for as
low as $600 a week—not a bad deal. A good example of Shawano lodging is

It's strictly German food at
Sigrid's Bavarian Trail

German deli, all overlooking Loon Lake.
A nice new find is
Club 22
(N3925 Hwy 22, 715/526-3800, dinner daily, $11-22), a
classic supper club. The bar is as big as the dining room, filled with antique beer detritus.
Club 22 serves German and supper club fare. The folks here are very friendly.
