So pristine are these waters that the Wolf River was the inspiration for the state's most
enduring environmental debate—whether or not a mine to the northwest in Crandon would
endanger the ecology. And in terms of recreation, these waters are, indeed, blue ribbon for
rafters and kayakers.

periods, operators shut down trips—proof it can be serious business.) Outfitters in these
parts generally don't supply guides or captains, so you're on your own. White-water en-
thusiasts also note: The Red River nearby—Gresham, especially—is also quite good for
kayaking.
Most offer camping. Shotgun Eddy (715/882-4461, www.shotguneddy.com ), however,
has been around forever and even outfitted National Geographic for a story.
Operating out of Keshena on the Menominee Indian Reservation is Big Smokey Falls
Rafting (715/799-3359), with three runs between the W. W. Bridge paralleling WIS 55
through three falls areas.
