Drive-Ins
Oshkosh has two classic drive-ins. Leon's (121 W. Murdock Ave., 920/231-7755,
11am-11pm Sun.-Thurs., 11am-midnight Fri.-Sat. summer) is a classic neon kind of place
with delectable custards (and turtle sundaes) and a mouthwatering homemade sloppy joe-
style concoction. Ardy and Ed's (2413 S. Main St., 920/231-5455) has been around since
1948 and does not appear much changed. It still plays 1950s tunes, and the waitstaff still
gets around aboard roller skates.
Fish Fries
Hands down, locals pick Jeff's (1005 Rugby St., 920/231-7450, dinner till 10pm Mon.-
Thurs. and Sat., lunch and dinner Fri., breakfast and dinner Sun., $4-20) as the place to go
for great seafood simultaneously down-home and cutting edge. The traditional perch at the
Friday fish fry simply heads the list of seafood and steaks.
Mexican
Head for Lara's Tortilla Flats (715 N. Main St., 920/233-4440, 11am-10pm Mon.-Sat.,
$5-12), a real-deal family affair turning out excellent norteño food—the recipes came up
with grandma from her Salinas boardinghouse a century ago, and everything's made from
scratch. The decor features images of the clan's role in the Mexican Revolution as well as
great-grandpa's role in capturing legendary bandito Gregorio Cortez.
