Side Trips
In nearby New London, along the Wolf River, the
Mosquito Hill Nature Center
(N3880
Rogers Rd., 920/779-6433,
www.mosquitohill.com
)
offers some good hiking trails and the
very intriguing
Wisconsin Butterfly House,
showcasing Wisconsin's native butterfly spe-
cies. The American water spaniel, bred by a local resident, also originated in New London.
Among the oldest paved trails in Wisconsin is hard-to-find number 53 on Wisconsin's
Rustic Road system. Beginning in 1857, work was done on what today are Garrity,
McCabe, Greiner, and Bodde Roads, northwest of Appleton along U.S. 41 at Highway
JJ. (Keep your eyes peeled—it's somewhat confusing.) Along the way, you'll pass scenic
double-arch bridges, a stone silo, and a wildlife conservation area.
Pick up a copy of the free monthly

Nightlife
Park Central
(318 W. College Ave., 920/738-5603) comprises a half-dozen bars, comedy
clubs, and sports bars. Closer to Lawrence University, one place to check out is
Houdini's
Lounge
(117 S. Appleton St., 920/832-8615), a pub with Houdini as a central theme (no
surprise) and more than 60 beers available.
Bazil's
(109 W. College Ave., 920/954-1770) features an amazing 135 microbrews.
The
Stone Cellar Brewpub
(1004 Olde Oneida St., 920/735-0507) is an 1858 brewery
that whips out a few tasty brands—one named for Houdini.
USA Today
called
The Wooden Nickel
(217 E. College Ave., 920/735-0661) the best
sports bar in Wisconsin, and it's hard to argue with that.
I love
Olde Town Tavern
(107 W. College Ave., 920/954-0103) for its wonderful beers
of yesteryear.
