paper, from start to finish, with lots of activities for the kids. It's amazing how much paper
touches our lives.
Hearthstone Historic House
Hearthstone Historic House (625 W. Prospect Ave., 920/730-8204, www.focol.org/
hearthstone , 10am-3:30pm Thurs.-Fri., 11am-3:30pm Sat., 1pm-3:30pm Sun., $7 adults) is
a massive 1882 Victorian. Within Appleton's city limits, the old Fox drops almost 40 feet,
much of it in angry rapids. In the late 1880s the Hearthstone, the city's major architectural
draw, was the first home to be lighted by a self-contained hydroelectric plant (the United
States' first mostly electric streetcar line went up simultaneously). The rich original ap-
pointmentshavebeenpreserved,downtoperiodelectroliersandlightswitchesdesignedby
Thomas Edison.Hands-ondisplays teach visitors aboutelectricity andallow youtooperate
the controls of a power plant.
