Appleton has been referred to as the Queen of the Fox Cities and the Princess of Paper Val-
ley (though one local pointed out that if you said that here, no one would know what city
youweretalkingabout).BisectedbytheFoxRiver,thisspread-outcityhardlyseemspaper-
centered industrial when you're traipsing about the gentrified downtown area.
Onecivicnucleusiswell-respectedLawrenceUniversity,asmallliberal-artscollegethat
was the state's first co-ed institution of higher education and also the first to initiate a post-
graduate papermaking institute.
The Fox Cities and Fox Valley
BetweenNeenahandKaukaunaalongLakeWinnebago'snorthwesterncaplieadozencon-
catenate communities making up the Fox Cities region—a region part of but distinct from
the Fox River Valley, which itself stretches along the Fox River-Lake Winnebago corridor
and takes in all communities between Green Bay and Oshkosh. Appleton is the region's
economic anchor; the smallest town is Combined Locks. All take their inspiration from the
Fox River—one of the few rivers in North America to flow north. Together, the Fox Cit-
iesconstitute thethird-largestmetropolitan area inthestate (pop.180,000),astatistic many
Wisconsinites find surprising.
