Driving to Green Bay from Sturgeon Bay (via WIS 57N,45miles) takes 50minutes. From
Milwaukee(viaI-43,118miles),ittakestwohours.FromMadison(viaUS151andUS41,
135 miles), it takes 2.5 hours. From Minneapolis (via I-94 and WIS 29, 278 miles), it takes
4.5 hours. From Chicago (via I-94 and I-43, 208 miles), it takes 3.5 hours.
By Bus
The bus depot (800 Cedar St., 920/432-4883) is served by Greyhound to most points in
southern and western Wisconsin and west to Minnesota.
ONEIDA NATION
West of Green Bay are the 12 square miles making up the Oneida Indian Reservation.
Known as the “People of the Standing Stone,” the Oneida were members of the League of
the Iroquois and once a protectorate of the Stockbridge-Munsee bands on the East Coast.
Theymovedwestward enmasse(saveforasmall bandstill inNewYork)notlongafterthe
turn of the 18th century.
Oneoftheonlyrepositories ofthehistoryoftheOneida isthe Oneida Nation Museum
(W892 EE Rd., 920/869-2768, www.oneidanation.org/museum , 9am-5pm Tues.-Fri.,
10am-5pm Sat., $2 adults, $1 children). Exhibits in the main hall focus on Oneida history
andculture;alonghouseandstockadeareoutside,aswellasanicenaturetrail.TheOneida
powwow takes place on or near the Fourth of July.
The Bottom of the Door
Formanyfolks,DoorCountybeginsonlywhentheyhavebuzzedthebridgespanningStur-
geon Bay's Lake Michigan canal; others claim that you're not in the county until WIS 42
andWIS57bifurcateintobaysideandlakesideroutesnortheastoftown.Still,DoorCounty
proper includes a chunk of 15 or more miles south of the ship channel, and the peninsula
comprises underappreciated Kewaunee County, east of Green Bay, as well.
But WIS 57 leaves much to the imagination. More adventuresome travelers might at-
tempt to find Highway A out of Green Bay; it spins along the same route, but right
atop the lake. Bypassing Point Sable—once a boundary between Native American tribal
lands—the road offers views of a state wildlife area across the waters. Farther up, you
can see Vincent Point and, immediately after that, Red Banks itself. This byway continues
