TITLETOWN'S TITLES
After the Packers whomped their opponents in the first season, they became the first
NFLteamtowinthreeconsecutiveNFLtitles,andtheydidittwice—1929-1931and
1965-1967.Inall,theywon11championshipsthrough1968andtheLombardiyears.
In fact, though the Lombardi-led teams get all the glory, the teams of the early years
were even more dominant, amassing a 34-5-2 record.
Then the well went dry. Before the 1990s brought in more forceful management,
the Packers suffered through their longest drought ever between NFC Central Di-
vision Championships: 24 years. Twenty-four long, unbearable, embarrassing years.
Still, the fans dutifully packed the stadium every Sunday. They always believed.
But after all those doormat decades, the Packers finally won the Super Bowl
again in 1997, which began an always-in-the-playoffs run culminating in yet another
notchintheTitletownbeltonFebruary6,2011,whenthePackersdefeatedtheSuper
Bowl-seasoned Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 for their record 13th NFL championship
and fourth Super Bowl title. The headline in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel said it
all: “Titletown Again.” (Although the most apt quote oft-heard after the game was,
“The Lombardi trophy is coming home!”)
Perhaps the most unusual state park in Wisconsin is Heritage Hill Living History Mu-
seum (2640 S. Webster Ave., 920/448-5150, www.heritagehillgb.org , 10am-4:30pm Mon.-
Sat., noon-4:30pm Sun.,Apr.-Oct., $8adults). More than 25historic buildings from around
Wisconsin have been reconstructed at this 50-acre site—the buildings include mock-ups
of flimsy original sapling-and-bark dwellings of the Jesuits and some of the oldest extant
buildings in Wisconsin. All areas are accessible via wagons.
Bay Beach Amusement Park
One of my favorites in Green Bay is the anachronistic gathering of more than a dozen rides
along the bay shoreline at the Bay Beach Amusement Park (1313 Bay Beach Rd., 920/
