Course and a challenging Dunes Course, both PGA championship courses. In 2000 Whist-
ling Straits unveiled its new Irish Course, a companion course to the first Straits course;
among other things, it features some of the tallest sand dunes in the United States. It's
all good enough for the PGA Championship to have been played here—twice. Call 920/
457-4446 for details; it's neither cheap nor easy to golf these courses.

mond resort. The 1918 red-brick facade of an erstwhile workers' hostel and dormitory has
been retained, along with the original carriage house, though both have been poshly retro-
fitted. A full slate of recreation is offered, of note two championship Pete Dye golf courses
(one of them considered one of the most perfect examples in the world of a shot-master's
course). There's also a private 500-acre wildlife preserve to explore. If that's not enough,
thesevendiningroomsandrestaurants include thestate'sbest—the Immigrant Room,win-
ner of the prestigious DiRoNa Award. Here, various rooms offer the ethnic cuisine and her-
itage of France, Holland, Germany, Scandinavia, and England. The food is created with re-
gional Wisconsin ingredients. Jackets are required.
If ever you splurge in Wisconsin, this is one of the places to do it. If not, consider taking
one of the tours offered Monday-Saturday at 2pm.
