In-Depth Information
The top restaurant for gourmands in town is M Trio (4655 Hwy. E, 920/868-2092, din-
ner till 9pm daily Memorial Day-late Oct., $12-18), an eclectic and ambitious Italian and
countryFrencheateryservingfantasticantipastiandentrées.Thisplacegetsravesfromvis-
itors for its Italian and French dishes. It's subdued in a lovely setting, yet kids are welcome
and the staff have always been much praised. It's very well done, and has been for many
years now.
Kids may prefer the Log Den (6626 WIS 42, 920/868-3888, lunch and dinner daily,
brunch Sun., $8-25), just south of Egg Harbor on WIS 42. Wood is indeed everywhere,
much of it ornately—at times cheekily—carved into a menagerie of anthropomorphism
(love the lolling bear). Find burgers and sandwiches to ahi tuna, bluepoint oysters, and
prime rib. The families that run the place have been along these shores and in these woods
for more than a century. It's one of the most fun places to watch a Packers game, as well.
DOOR COUNTY CHERRIES TAKE ON THE NATION
ABC's Good Morning America once set out in search of the best breakfast in Amer-
ica. After all the interminable hoo-hah that generally involves, it came down to four:
Fish Creek's White Gull Inn (specifically, its tears-of-joy-inducing cherry-stuffed
French toast) pitted against three other friendly-though-they-should-have-known-
better-than-to-try eateries nationwide. Come on, are you serious? The White Gull
came out on top. Score one for the Cheeseheads (or Cherryheads up here). In celeb-
ration, the inn serves it daily now. It comes with a night's stay; you can substitute,
but honestly, why on earth would you?
Carnivores will want to head directly to Casey's BBQ & Smokehouse (7855 WIS 42,
920/868-3038, from 11am daily), just about the perfect place to gorge on brisket or ribs
after a long day of paddling or pedaling.
