Newport State Park
This park is a true hidden gem, and doesn't get many visitors, even on holidays, when
other parks would be entirely inundated.
Hiking
The park maintains nearly 40 miles of trails, along which you'll find wilderness campsites.
By far the most popular area of the park is the northern tier and trails leaving from the
picnic area, including the Europe Bay/Hotz Trail to Europe Lake—one of the largest of
the county's inland lakes—a pristine, sandy gem uncluttered by development. (It's three-
plus miles one-way.) With sandy forests and rocky beaches with great views of Porte des
Mortes and the surrounding islands, it's got it all.
As you stroll the Europe Bay Trail toward the lake, consider a quick jaunt toward a
promontory called Lynd Point along, naturally, Lynd Point Trail, a mile-long (one-way)
trek. Gravel Island, viewable from Lynd Point, is a national ornithological refuge.
To the southern section of the park, the picnic area also has access to the Newport Trail
(a five-mile loop), which heads west to Duck Bay on the eastern edge of the park; Spider
Island, viewable from here, is another wildlife refuge for nesting gulls.
