In-Depth Information
Some hotels claim to be green, but the Green Leaf Inn in nearby Delavan, slated to
open in early 2014, lives it. The inn will purportedly be the first (and only) hotel that gen-
erates all its own energy. It will also store rainwater, process its own waste, and have other
quite amazing (and laudable) features.
$50-100
If money is an issue, the only sub-$100 rooms around are at the tired-but-tolerable Budget
Host Diplomat (1060 Wells St., 262/248-1809, budgethost-lakegeneva.com , $70-115) or
Lake Geneva Motel (524 S. Wells St., 262/248-3464, lakegenevamotelwi.com , $99-109).
$100-150
You might find the rustic (but modern enough) cottages and folks of Duffy's (W4086 Lake
Shore Dr., 262/248-7100, www.duffpub.com , from $125) to be the way things used to be.
It's rustic and the antithesis of chi-chi. It's a ten-minute drive northwest, but worth it.
There's a good pub here as well.
Bugs Moran used to hang out at the Waters Edge of Lake Geneva (W4232 West End
Rd., 262/245-9845, www.watersedgebb.com ) in the 1920s and 1930s. Seven suites full of
antiques—each with its own private deck—are available in a bucolic, quiet setting. You
may get lucky and find a $150 room here; it'd be worth it in Lake Geneva.
Over $150
The French Country Inn (WIS 50 W, 262/245-5220, www.frenchcountryinn.com ,
$175-275) was partially constructed in Denmark and shipped stateside more than a century
ago to serve as the Danish pavilion in the 1893 World's Fair; the house later did time as
a Chicago rumrunner's joint during Prohibition. All rooms have TV and air-conditioning;
some have fireplaces. Some have opined the rooms have become a bit worn, but I haven't
seen it.
The Abbey Resort (269 Fontana Blvd., Fontana, 262/275-6811 or 800/558-2405,
www.theabbeyresort.com , from $240) is an enormous spread of 13 parlors and 140 villas,
some fireplace suites, and standard rooms—all of which got a $40 million renovation
(renovation, not the original cost). Amenities include indoor and outdoor pools, a health
club, waterskiing, tennis, bicycling, and golf. It has four restaurants, four lounges,
and—perhaps its most attractive offering—a sybaritic European spa.
The multidiamond, polystarred M Grand Geneva (U.S. 12 and WIS 50, 262/248-8811
or 800/558-3417, www.grandgeneva.com , $239-389) is worth every penny if every media
