The limestone Greek revival and Italianate mansion that is the

stead

suggested), built from locally quarried stone, sits on 15 acres and has been restored to peri-
od detail, with special attention to the original color schemes. A great limestone barn filled
with farm implements sits on the property, along with a smokehouse nearby. A rural school
has been relocated here, and the gray shed-planked
Beckman-Howe mill
(608/365-1600),
on the National Register of Historic Places and dating to the post-Civil War period, is a
five-minute drive west on Highway H. The mill has been selected as one of the 10 most
endangered historic sites in Wisconsin.
