In-Depth Information
The remains of one of the Midwest's earliest cultures is at Aztalan State Park.
Lake Mills is an engaging classic small Victorian town. Encircling a central park, it has
widetree-linedavenues,mansions,anddroopywillowtrees.VisitorscanenjoyLakeMills'
free Bartles Beach or, for a fee, Sandy Beach, on the other side of Rock Lake. (An aside:
There are those who believe—this is no joke, universities have sent research teams—that
there are pyramids beneath the black surface of Rock Lake. Supposedly, these structures
were produced bycopper-mining expeditions fromAsia andEurope several thousand years
ago. Why they would halt mining and create pyramids hasn't been explained.) The less
leisure-minded should head to the junction of WIS 89 and Highway A, a node for the Gla-
cial Drumlin Trail, a 47-mile multipurpose recreation trail spanning from Waukesha to

theentiretrail,withanolddepotandtrestleatthetrailheadnotfarfromRockLake.There's
also a good wildlife area south of Lake Mills.
The community arguably has the best burgers in the state—butter-filled little heart-at-
tack patties called sliders served all summer by the American Legion (129 S. Main St.,
Lake Mills, 920/648-5115) right downtown.
