Mayville
East of the marsh in the town of Mayville—whose city water has been judged by certain
scientists as some of the best-tasting in the United States—is the White Limestone School
(N. Main St., 920/387-3474, www.mlsm.org , 1:30pm-4:30pm first and third Sun. May-
Oct., free), known mostly for its collection of rural Wisconsin photographs taken by Edgar
Mueller. The local historical society operates the Hollenstein Wagon and Carriage Fact-
ory (11 N. German St., 920/387-5530, www.mayvillehistoricalsociety.org , 1:30pm-4:30pm
every second and fourth Sun., free), an old factory that once produced wagons. Several
wagons are on display.
One of the best inns in Wisconsin—for eating and sleeping—the M Audubon Inn (45
N.MainSt.,920/387-5848, www.auduboninn.com , from$120)datesfrom1897,andyou'll
feel you're in bygone days when you enter.
Recreation
TheHoriconMarshWildlifeArea,inthesouthernhalfofthemarsh,hasseveralestablished
canoe trails throughthewetlands,MieskeBay,andalongtheeastbranchoftheRockRiver.
More than six miles of hiking trails are accessible on the south side of WIS 49.
Canoes can be rented at the Blue Heron Landing, WIS 33 at the bridge in Horicon,
which is also the place to get aboard a pontoon boat tour of the marsh with Blue Heron
Tours (920/485-4663, www.horiconmarsh.com ). Tours run daily at 1pm May-September,
weekends only in the off-season. A one-hour tour is $11 adults.
You also have access to the 30-mile-long Wild Goose State Trail (bikers $4 pass).
Tons of special events take place throughout the year. One of the best in North America
is early May's Bird Festival; check www.horiconmarshbirdclub.com for information.
COLUMBUS
Downtown Columbus has intriguing, small-town architecture, the most significant ex-
amples of which are the “Jewel Box” (159 W. James St.) and the 1920 Farmer's and Mer-
chant's Bank, a lovely example of Louis Sullivan's Prairie School style and now a quasi-
local museum full of banking and architectural objects upstairs.
