In-Depth Information
there had been no fraud, but one sentence in their report
kept the furore going. They said that it was
very surpris-
ing that research in an area that depends so heavily on
statistical methods has not been carried out in close col-
laboration with professional statisticians.
The deniers
shifted their attack from fraud to bad statistics.
One of the skeptics at that time is an old friend, Profes-
sor Richard Muller of the University of California at
Berkeley. He raised the money to put together a group
of top
ight scientists and statisticians to do its own analy-
sis of the temperature data using the best statistical analy-
sis techniques. The results agreed with those reported by
CRU and the IPCC. Rich is now a convert; he believes
that climate change is real, that humans are the cause of it,
and that we should do something about it. He has a
website at www.berkeleyearth.org, which contains a great
deal of interesting material.
We will continue to have skeptics, which is not a bad
thing since it keeps the modelers and analysts on their
toes. We seem to continue to have deniers whose ration-
ales are unclear to me, and whose talk, to borrow a line
from Shakespeare is
a tale told by an idiot, full of sound
and fury, signifying nothing.
