recession, but the demand for oil continued its rise as the
growth of the developing countries continues.
Figure
shows how energy is used in the US econ-
omy. The transportation sector uses
.
% of all the
primary energy and
% of it is oil-based. The buildings
sector uses
% of our total primary energy and a large
fraction of that is used to generate the electricity consumed
in commercial and residential buildings. The supply is
diverse because electricity generation uses so many differ-
ent primary energy sources (renewables in the
gure are
dominated by hydroelectric power and biomass). The US
