Housed in the
former house of an Ottoman official, Avalon glitters with stylish suites boasting huge
beds, plunge baths, flat-screen TVs, fine furniture and soothing peach walls. There's also
a riad-style courtyard that's perfect for reading and lowering the pulse.
Eating
Old Town
The most flavoursome food and inviting tavernas are in the backstreets.
Nireas
TAVERNA $
( 22410 31741; Sofokleous 45-47; mains €8-16; )
With a pretty, vine-shaded canopy, this
fresh restaurant features calamari, octopus salad, whitebait, grilled prawns and Symi
shrimp to name but a few. Inside are candlelit lemon-walled stone alcoves. Pure ro-
mance.
To Megiston
TAVERNA $
( 29127; Sofokelous; mains €10-15; 10.30am-late)
We like it for its lively Greek
soundtrack and earthy cuisine. People-watch alfresco, as you feast on a menu of
mousa-
kas
(baked layers of eggplant or zucchini, minced meat and potatoes topped with cheese
sauce), swordfish, souvlakia (cubes of meat on skewers), pasta and lamb
kleftiko
(slow
oven-baked).
Yanni's Restaurant
TAVERNA $
( 22410 36535; Platonos; mains €8; noon-midnight; )
The Karpathian matriarch
dressed in colourful rustic garb dispenses wise smiles and sesame-coated biscuits, while
the walls are daubed in marine frescoes, the air dancing with aromas of
stifadho
(meat,
game or seafood cooked with onions in a tomato puree) and seafood souvlakia. Hidden
but well worth the search.
