Old Town
A mesh of Byzantine, Turkish and Latin architecture, the Old Town is divided into the
Kollakio (the Knights' Quarter, where the Knights of St John lived during medieval
times), the Hora and the Jewish Quarter. The Knights' Quarter contains most of the me-
dieval historical sights while the Hora, often referred to as the Turkish Quarter, is primar-
ily Rhodes Town's commercial sector with shops and restaurants.
The Old Town is accessible by nine
pyles
(main gates) and two rampart-access portals.
The 12m-thick city walls are closed to the public, but you can take a pleasant walk
around the imposing walls of the Old Town via the wide, pedestrian moat walk.
