fell a few decades later when an earthquake struck in 226 BC. For almost a millen-
nium it lay in ruins until it was broken into pieces and sold by invading Arabs to a
Syrian Jew in AD 654, then allegedly transported abroad on the backs of 900
camels.
Getting There & Away
AIR
Olympic Air ( 22410 24571; www.olympicair.com ; Ierou Lohou 9) has flights across Greece
and the Dodecanese while Aegean Airlines ( 22410 98345; www.aegeanair.com ; Diagoras
airport) offers flights to Athens, most of Europe and to the US.
BOAT
Rhodes is the main port in the Dodecanese and offers a complex timetable of departures
to Piraeus, Sitia, Thessaloniki and many stops in between. Dodekanisos Seaways (
22410 70590; Afstralias 3) runs daily catamarans up and down the Dodecanese, as do Blue
Star Ferries ( 0030 210 891 9800; www.bluestarferries.com ) , which are slower but cheap-
er. Tickets are available from the kiosk at the dock. In Rhodes Town you'll also find the
Sea Star ticket booth for ferries to Tilos and the ANES ticket booth for long-distance fer-
ries to Athens (also services by Blue Star).
The EOT (Greek National Tourist Organisation) in Rhodes Town can provide you with
current schedules. Tickets are also available from Skevos' Travel Agency ( Click here ) .
There is a daily car-carrying caïque (small boat) between Skala Kamirou, on Rhodes'
west coast, and Halki (€10, 1¼ hours). From Skala Kamirou services depart at 9am, and
from Halki at 4pm. There are also excursion boats to Symi (€25 return) daily in summer,
leaving Mandraki Harbour at 9am and returning at 6pm. You can buy tickets at most
travel agencies, but it's better to buy them at the harbour, where you can check out the
boats personally.
Two local ferries, the Nissos Halki and Nikos Express, run five times per week
between Halki and Skala Kamirou (€10, approximately 30 minutes), including a daily
car-carrying caïque.
International
A daily catamaran from Rhodes' Commercial Harbour to Marmaris, Turkey (50 minutes,
return ticket €65), departs at 8am and 4.30pm from June to September. In winter, there
