Venetian Fort FORT
( 8.30am-3pm) Strategically perched atop a hill, this structure is locally called
kazarma (from the Venetian casa di arma ) and was built as a garrison by the Venetians.
These are the only remains of the fortifications that once protected the town. The site is
now used as an open-air venue.
Sleeping
Plenty of reasonably priced three-star city hotels but no fancy resorts.
Sitia Bay Hotel HOTEL $$$

this modern hotel, which caters to both couples and families with three room sizes, all
with a spacious bathroom, kitchenette and a balcony to let in the sea breezes. The swim-
ming pool is nonchlorinated and has soothing massage jets. Breakfast is €7.
Hotel Flisvos HOTEL $$$

modern and well-kept property along the southern waterfront has harbour views from its
(balconied) front rooms and a flowery courtyard for breakfast and post-lunch chilling in
the shade. The furniture is standard-issue but comfortable enough.
Eating & Drinking
The tourist-geared waterfront tavernas offer standard fare at normal prices. North of the
main square, the promenade is lined with cafes, bars and music clubs, ranging in style
from drab to fab.

retro wall clocks create a quaint setting in this locally adored taverna, which churns out a
changing roster of honest-to-goodness mayirefta (ready-cooked meals) and tasty grills.
It's especially busy at lunchtime.
