the short saunter to the peninsula's southeastern tip to sample the authentic comfort food
and warm hospitality at this locally adored taverna with its own small beach. All the clas-
sics are here along with such menu surprises as the meat-free chestnut stifado (stew), salt
cod with garlic sauce and the Methexis salad drizzled with delicious 'mystery sauce'.
Third Eye VEGETARIAN $

airy and intimate, this local institution just in from the sandy Pahia Ammos is a cheerful
herbivore haven that dishes up an eclectic daily menu of curries, salads and pastas, as
well as Greek and Asian dishes. There's occasional live music in the garden and basic
rooms upstairs (€25 to €30).
Skala BAR
( www.skalabar.gr ; mains €2.50-7; 7am-late; ) This rocking portside pub is packed from
breakfast time until the last tippler staggers out in the wee hours. Their big burgers are
great for restoring balance to the brain.
Information
Three ATMs are on Eleftheriou Venizelou, while the post office is at Pahia Ammos'
northern end. In summer, a tourist information booth may be open in the harbour. Selino
Travel ( 28230 42272; selino2@otenet.gr ) sells boat tickets and excursions, including to
the gorges of Samaria (€32) and Agia Irini (€27).
Getting There & Away
BOAT
Boats leave from the old harbour at the pebbly beach's southern end. There is a daily
morning ferry from Paleohora to Sougia (€8, 40 minutes) and Agia Roumeli (€14, 1½
