SANCTUARIES OF THE FOREIGN GODS
Delos was a place of worship for many beyond the Greeks, and these temples are
concentrated in the area called the
Sanctuaries of the Foreign Gods
. At the
Shrine to the Samothracian Great Gods
, people worshipped the Kabeiroi (twins
Dardanos and Aeton). At the
Sanctuary of the Syrian Gods
there are remains of a
theatre
used for mystical rites (some say ritual orgies). The
Shrine to the Egyptian
Gods
honoured deities including Serapis and Isis.
Getting There & Away
Boats for Delos (return €17, 30 minutes) leave Hora (Mykonos) three times daily in high
season starting at about 9am, with the last outward boat about 11am. Boats return
between 12.30pm and 1pm. Departure/return times are posted at the ticket
kiosk
at the
foot of the jetty at the south end of the old harbour. When buying tickets, establish which
boat you can return on. There are fewer boats outside July and August. No boats go
Mondays, when the site is closed.
