Sleeping
Few of Fira's sleeping options are cheap. For a caldera view, expect to pay a much higher
price. Some domatia touts at the port may claim that their rooms are in town, when
they're actually a long way out; ask to see a map showing the exact location. Many ho-
tels on the caldera rim cannot be reached by vehicle and may well involve several flights
of steps leading to your accommodation. Most budget and midrange places offer free
transfer to port or airport; other hotels may charge anything from €10 upwards for a
transfer.
Santorini Camping HOSTEL, CAMPGROUND $
( 22860 22944; www.santorinicamping.gr ; Fira; dm/d/q €15/50/70, camp sites per person
€12.50; Mar-Nov; ) Located on the eastern outskirts of town, this hostel and
campground has some shade and decent facilities. You get what you pay for with the
rooms, which are fairly clean but nothing special. There's a self-service restaurant, mini-
market and pool.
Villa Soula HOTEL $$$
MAP
( 22860 23473; www.santorini-villasoula.gr ; s/d €60/80; ) Cheerful and spotless,
this hotel is a great deal. Rooms aren't large but are freshly renovated with small, breezy
balconies. Colourful public areas and a small, well-maintained pool give you room to
spread out a little. The breakfast room is a tad dark, but you can opt to take it on your
balcony. It's a short walk from the town centre.
Karterados Caveland Hostel HOSTEL $$$
( 22860 22122; www.cave-land.com ; Karterados; incl breakfast dm €15-21, d with/without bath-
room €70/50, apt €120; ) This new facility, opened in 2011, is based in a fascin-
ating old winery complex in Karterados about 1km from central Fira. It was once a local
tennis club and the courts are available to guests. Accommodation is in the old wine
caves, all of them with creative and colourful decor and good facilities. The surrounding
garden and public areas are peaceful and relaxing. There are yoga classes on offer for €7
to €35.
