Moni HozoviotissisΜονή της Χοζοβιώτισσας
As you round the bend and first catch sight of this iconic
monastery
( 8am-1pm &
5-7pm)
, seemingly embedded into the cliff face high above the sea, you'll quickly forget
the zillions of stairs you've climbed to reach it. This is scenery at its most dramatic. Built
on the precipitous east coast below Hora, the monastery contains a miraculous icon that
was found in the sea below the cliff. Enter through a green, hobbit-sized door to discover
the secrets of the monastery. Entrance is free, but donations are appreciated.
The dress code is modest and strict. No shorts, no mini-skirts, no bare shoulders and
no women in trousers. No exceptions.
From about mid-May to October there's a daily bus service to the monastery from
Katapola, Hora and Aegiali.
