In-Depth Information
As you sail into Ermoupoli, named after Hermes, its peaked hilltops emerge, each topped
by a dazzling church. The Catholic settlers built on high, and the 19th-century Orthodox
newcomers built from below. Now buildings spread in a pink-and-white cascade over it
all, and the centre is a fun maze of stairways, pedestrianised shopping streets and neo-
classical mansions all radiating out from the grand Plateia Miaouli with its impressive
town hall.
Catholic Ano Syros and Greek Orthodox Vrodado spill down from high hilltops to
the northwest and northeast of town, with even taller hills rising behind.
