Church of the Assumption of Mary CHURCH
(Ekklisia Kimiseos Theotokou; 25310 22827; Eleftheriou Venizelou; 8am-7pm) Built in 1800
on a Byzantine shrine site, the church contains 16th-century icons and wood carvings.
Archaeological Museum MUSEUM
( 25310 22411; Simeonidi 4; 8.30am-5pm) Significant archaeological finds, ac-
companied by English-language wall texts, detail ancient Thracian history. Also see the
Roman coins, clay figurines, delicate gold wreaths and Byzantine glazed ceramics. A de-
tailed map showing Thracian and eastern Macedonian sites is available.
Ecclesiastical Museum MUSEUM
(Imaret; 25310 34177; Xenofontos 8; €3; 10.30am-1.30pm Tue-Sun, 5-8pm Wed-Fri) This
museum occupies Komotini's early Ottoman almshouse ( ptohokomeio in Greek), inside a
courtyard. The structure's brickwork and design resemble a Byzantine church. Ottoman
conqueror Gazi Ervinoz Bey built it around 1363. It exhibits post-Byzantine icons,
500-year-old printed gospels, silver ceremonial crosses, gold embroidery and 18th-cen-
tury Hebrew scrolls.
Turkish Quarter HISTORIC AREA
Just behind Plateia Irinis, Komotini's relaxing Turkish quarter has old houses, barber
shops and teahouses. Sights include the 1884 Clock Tower (Orologio), Yeni Camii
('New Mosque' in Turkish) and Eski Camii ('Old Mosque' from 1608), still operational.
