Ammouliani's best beach, Alykes , is a 20-minute stroll westward. Walking to more
distant beaches and accommodation can take over an hour, and the shadeless island has
no taxis, so call ahead for a free lift if staying overnight.
Southwestern Ouranoupoli is Athos' major village, with ferries to the monasteries,
and some excellent beaches. Also, daily sightseeing Athos boat cruises give otherwise
banned females the chance to see west-coast monasteries from 500m away. Boat hire
(€40) accesses the sandy Drenia archipelago , 1.9km offshore, east of Ammouliani.
Ouranoupoli's Pyrgos Prosforeiou (Prosforeiou Tower; 23770 71651; adult/student &
child €2/1; 9am-6pm Tue-Sun) , a restored 14th-century Byzantine tower, exhibits ancient
and Byzantine artefacts, and honours the Locks, an Australian couple who inhabited it in
the 1920s. Large maps and detailed images highlight local sites. These include the ruined
11th-century Monastery of Zygou , east of town on the border of monastic Athos; wo-
men can visit it.
