Getting There & Away
Buses from Thessaloniki's Halkidiki bus terminal serve Kallithea (€8.80, 1½ hours, 13
daily), Pefkohori (€11.80, two hours, 10 daily) and Polyhrono (€11, 2¼ hours, 10 daily)
on the east coast, via Kryopigi and Hanioti (€11.50, 2½ hours). Buses also reach Paliouri
(€12, two hours, seven daily) on the southern tip. Discounts apply for 15-day open-return
tickets.
SithonianPeninsula Χερσόνησος Σιθωνίας
People come to Sithonia (particularly, the east) for superb beaches, laid-back nightlife
and an escapist feel. Although it's no longer 'undiscovered', you can find hidden coves
by venturing down dirt roads or exploring by boat. After August, things quieten down.
The coast road loops around Sithonia, skirting wide bays, climbing into pine- forested
hills and dipping down to a few small resorts. However, buses from Thessaloniki some-
times operate different lines for eastern and western coastal destinations - if you're on
the wrong bus, you may have to change at Nikiti, at Sithonia's northern base.
WEST COAST
The entry to Sithonia, where the coast roads diverge, is Nikiti - beyond here on the west
coast are beaches like Paradisos , Kalogria Beach and Lagomandra Beach . Further,
Neos Marmaras is Sithonia's largest resort, with a crowded beach but many domatia and
good seafood tavernas.
From Neos Marmaras the road climbs into the hills, before descending to more
beaches and campgrounds. Toroni and Porto Koufos , two subdued southwestern resorts,
