In-Depth Information
MAP
( 2310 220 310; cnr Ethnikis Amynis & Tsopela; 9am-2am) This classic kafeneio exudes
old Salonica, with its 1950s-style Greek decor and lofty ceilings supported by columns.
It's popular with local students, artists and musicians.
Kafe Nikis 35 CAFE
MAP
( 2310 230 449; Leof Nikis 35) Set on the waterfront, this snug cafe sits just under street
level. It's perfect for a Sunday-morning espresso - get a window table and feel the
dappled sunlight dancing through the blinds.
Boat Bars BAR
(Waterfront; 6pm-1am) For partiers preferring an aqueous environment, take a booze
cruise. Boat bars, moored on the waterfront south of the White Tower, by Alexander the
Great's statue, have slightly different decorations and themes, with music from pop to
reggae to R&B.
These cruisers leave every 20 minutes for a half-hour chug around the Thermaikos
Kolpos; there's no admission charge and you can stay on board whether docked or adrift,
for the whole evening - just keep drinking!
Berlin BAR
MAP
(Hrysostomou Smyrnis 10; 2am-7am) The after-bar to beat all after-bars, Berlin has oper-
ated since 1979, and still has a dedicated crowd of bleary-eyed partiers looking to keep
the fun going till dawn. The music is varied, like the clientele.
North of Egnatia
Quieter and more residential, the area above Egnatia has less nightlife, though interesting
places do exist.
Cantina Tropicana BAR
MAP
( 2310 539 727; Egnatia 31; 10pm-4am) Just above Egnatia, Cantina Tropicana has mu-
sic (sometimes live) wafting from the western side, across an underpass where tables
stand outside and within the narrow bar. There are tropical drinks in this dive bar, albeit
no tropical atmosphere. Nevertheless, it's a laid-back place and fun late.
