History
Thessaloniki was named for a woman who herself was named to commemorate a milit-
ary victory, that of her father, Philip II, over a tribe in Thessaly with the help of crack
Thessalian horsemen. Thessaloniki married the Macedonian general Kassandros, who
named the city after her in 316 BC - ensuring that the royal daughter's name would
forever be on the lips of all who would ever experience the city.
