some olives and a tomato dip before you've even ordered. There are lovely dishes from
all over Greece, including a delicious apaki pork marinated in spices (typical of Crete),
snails and much more.
Plagios MEDITERRANEAN $$$
(cnr Kontaratou & Skirou; mains €9-25) An alternative to Volos' traditional tsipouradhika
(place that serves ouzo and light snacks) scene, this smart place has a low-key snob
factor and touts itself as an all-day bar-restaurant. It adds a touch of contemporary gour-
met to the Greek cuisine.
THE TSIPOURADHIKA
Volos is famous throughout Greece for itsouzeriesandtsipouradhika. If you have
not already come across one, anouzerie(strictly speaking, called atsipouradhiko)
is a type of small restaurant serving various plates of mezedhes and tiny bottles of
tsipouro,a distilled spirit, like ouzo but stronger. You can dilute it with water if you
prefer it weaker. When you've finished one round of mezedhes ortsipouro,you
keep ordering until you've had your fill (or can't stand up!). The basic rule: don't ex-
pect a drink without a plate. Typical mezedhes include grilledohtapodi(octopus)
and fried calamari. Traditionaltsipouradhikawere open during the day only. Some
