Kalamitsi is a lovely, modern, stone-built hotel with serene, well-appointed rooms (fam-
ily bungalows also available for €220). Within its shady grounds are paths leading to a
secluded pebbly beach. Home-cooked dinners and fresh buffet breakfasts are available to
guests.
Hotel Vardia HOTEL $$$

this relaxing and stylish stone hotel (near a former sentry tower and situated high behind
the village beyond the ancient Kardamyli). The 18 well-appointed studio-style rooms
have exceptional views of the Messinian Gulf. For those with transport, it's worth tack-
ling the hill. Entrance is at the southern end of town.
Eating
There's no shortage of eating options in and around Kardamyli. The inland villages of
Saidona, Mileu and Exochori also have some excellent tavernas.
There are two supermarkets side by side at the northern edge of the village.
Elies TAVERNA $

Right by Ritsa beach, 1km north of town, and nestled in olive groves, it's got the atmo-
sphere of a provincial Mediterranean private garden with top-quality nosh to boot. In
good weather, allow time in your travels to wile away an afternoon.
O Perivoulis TAVERNA $
( 27210 73713; mains €7-11; dinner Tue-Sun, closed Dec) What it lacks in seaside (it's in
the village), it makes up for with a cosy interior, pretty garden and excellent taverna
dishes that incorporate local ingredients where possible.
Taverna Dioskouri TAVERNA $
( 27210 73236; www.dioskuri.gr ; mains €7-14; lunch & dinner) A safe option with nothing
over the top, except for the friendly owner and the clifftop view - it overlooks the ocean
from the hillside just south of town.
