The closest campgrounds are 2km from central Sparta, or near Mystras village.
Hotel Lakonia
HOTEL $
( 27310 28951;
www.lakoniahotel.gr
; Palaeologou 89; s/d incl breakfast €40/55; )
The 32
cutting-edge rooms best suit sleek geeks, and are far from spartan. Two-tone chairs, spot
lighting and portal access are a few of the mod cons. Double-glazed windows cut out any
street noise.
Hotel Apollo
HOTEL $
( 27310 22491; fax 27310 23936; Thermopylon 84; s/d/tr €30/35/40)
A reasonable, plain but
spruce budget option.
Hotel Maniatis
HOTEL $$$
( 27310 22665;
www.maniatishotel.gr
;
Paleologou 72-76; s/d incl breakfast €80/100; )
Light and pleasant rooms have more designer shapes than a NYC contemporary-design
exhibition, and the service is efficient. The upmarket Zeys restaurant (mains €7 to €17) is
attached.
Eating
Tsipouradiko
TAVERNA $
( 27310 83585; Evangelistrias 50; €6-10; lunch Mon-Sat, dinner daily)
This atmospheric
spot has been renovated to look like an old-style shop and
tsipouradiko
- traditional bar-
rels, china pieces and old cans line the walls. There's an amazing backyard and all sorts
of nooks and crannies. As for the food? Traditional
mayirefta
(ready-cooked meals) and
grills. A must.
Kápari
MEDITERRANEAN $$$
(Caper; 2731 300520;
www.kaparirestaurant.gr
; mains €5-15)
A refreshing change to
Sparta's tired taverna scene, this clean, friendly spot does some great Mediterranean
dishes - lovely salads, excellent seafood and grills - with modern presentation (but that
does not mean minimalist servings. Far from it.).
