DON'T MISS
MYLOPOTAMOS ΜΥΛΟΠΌΤΑΜΟΣ
Do not miss quaint Mylopotamos, nestled in a small valley, 13km north of Hora. Its
central square is flanked by a charming church and bell tower, and by authentically
traditional Kafeneio O Platanos ( 27360 33397) , which in summer becomes an out-
door restaurant (mains €6 to €8). Staff can help with accommodation.
The Neraïda (water nymph) waterfall , with luxuriant greenery along the path, and
an aquamarine pool, feels magical as it changes colour in shifting light. Take the
righthand fork in the road after the church and follow the signs.
A portal leads into Mylopotamos' cool, crumbling kastro (Kato Hora) ,a war-
ren of well-preserved (locked) little churches along a spectaular promontory which
has views down a gorge and to the sea. To reach it, take the left-hand fork in the
road after the church and follow the signs to Kato Hora.
Other fabulous walks start in Mylopotamos; refer toKythira on Foot: 32 Carefully
Selected Walking Routes. The most picturesque and challenging walk heads along
a gorge with ruins of former flour mills. You pass waterfalls and swimming holes
along the way.
