Bear right past the Agia Evfymia harbourfront and continue until the road ends at famous
Dendrinos, overlooking the Bay of Sami. The cheerful Dendrinos family offer outstand-

meat), Kefallonian meat pie, or braised rabbit. Choose from what's fresh and save room
for chocolate soufflé with rich citrus cream. Penelope Cruz and Nicholas Cage were reg-
ulars when filming Captain Corelli's Mandolin here.

TOP OF CHAPTER
AssosΑσσος
Tiny, gorgeous Assos is an upmarket gem of whitewashed and pastel houses, many of
them pre-earthquake. Baby Italian cypresses dot the steep mountain descending to the
town which straddles the isthmus of a peninsula topped by a Venetian fortress . The fort-
ress makes a great hike, with superlative views and old-world ambience, and the tiny
green bay is eminently swimmable.
