Architecture
This island group offers a huge amount of architectural eye candy: fairytale castles on the
hilltops, frescoed Byzantine churches and Rhodes' walled, medieval Old Town. There
are mountain villages tucked away from pirates, ruins of ancient temples and Italian-in-
spired harbour towns.
Activities
Some of the world's top rock climbing, kite-surfing, beach-combing, diving and walking
is packed into the Dodecanese. Follow ancient footpaths to see endangered birdlife, hike
into the caldera of a bubbling volcano or hang ten on a surfboard.
Cuisine
Mix Greek cuisine with long-term Italian influences and get scrumptious results; pizzas,
pastas, stews and stuffed vegies, local cheeses, honey, wild greens and herbs, seafood
and grilled meats are all here. The Dodecanese is also home to organic-farm-based res-
taurants and top-notch chefs.
