(New Fortress; admission €3; 9am-5pm May-Oct) A steep climb leads to this austere ex-
ample of Venetian military architecture, added to extensively by the British. The interior
is an eerie mass of tunnels, rooms and staircases, and the exterior has fine views.
Mon Repos Estate PARK
(Kanoni Peninsula; 8am-7pm May-Oct, to 5pm Nov-Apr) On the southern outskirts of
town on the Kanoni Peninsula, an extensive wooded parkland estate surrounds an elegant
neoclassical villa housing the Museum of Palaeopolis ( 26610 41369; www.corfu.gr ;
adult/concession €3/2; 8am-7pm Tue-Sun May-Oct) , with entertaining archaeological dis-
plays and exhibits on the history of Corfu Town. Paths lead through lush grounds to the
ruins of two Doric temples; the first is truly a ruin, but the southerly Temple of Artemis
is serenely impressive.
Take a picnic and plenty of water, as there are no nearby shops. Buses go to Kanoni
from the Spianada (every 20 minutes).
Corfu Philharmonic Society MUSEUM

1840 by Nikolaos Mantzaros, the forward-thinking composer of the Greek national an-
them, the society funds free music programs and hosts a museum dedicated to the vi-
brant musical history of the island.

Founded in 1836, the oldest cultural institution in modern Greece houses 30,000
volumes. The art-filled mansion's upstairs map room houses the first map of Corfu, from
the 15th century. Also hosts concerts and lectures.
Vidos Island ISLAND
Boats from the old port (€5) go to Vidos Island, off the coast, for beaches or a ramble
through fortresses and a WWI Serbian cemetery .
