In-Depth Information
tury Byzantine Castle of Koskinas , and picturesque Frandato and Maratho vil-
lages.
When you reach Pigi , look for the Frandato sign; continue past it for the unusual
little Byzantine Chapel of Theoskepasti , tucked into overhanging granite. You
must clamber upwards to get to it, and duck to get inside. Provided the row of old
monks' skulls don't give you the creeps, the chapel makes for a wonderfully peace-
ful visit and is near Moni Theoktistis , with frescoes dating from 1686. The nearby
kafeneio(coffee house) is good for a relaxed coffee or juice with Maria, the kindly
owner.

West of Evdilos
Kambos Κάμπος
POP 250
Kambos, 3km west of Evdilos, was once mighty Oinoe (derived from the Greek word for
wine), Ikaria's capital. Traces of this ancient glory remain, compliments of a ruined Byz-
antine palace, Ikaria's oldest church and a small museum. Kambos' other main attrac-
tions are its sand-and-pebble beach and scenic hill walks.
Sights
On the right-hand side when entering Kambos from Evdilos stand the modest ruins of a
Byzantine palace . Other sights around Kambos include the small archaeological mu-
seum and Ikaria's oldest surviving Byzantine church.
Agia Irini Church CHURCH
Built on the site of a 4th-century basilica, this 12th-century church contains some
columns from this original. Alas, many of Agia Irini's frescoes remain covered with pro-
tective whitewash because there are no funds to pay for its removal.
Archaeological Museum MUSEUM
( 22750 31300) Kambos' small museum displays neolithic tools, geometric
vases, classical sculpture fragments, figurines and ivory trinkets. If it's closed, ask Vasilis
Kambouris (at Rooms Dionysos) to open it.
