TOP OF CHAPTER
PothiaΠόθια
POP 10,500
Crouching below brooding mountains, Pothia is rich with Greek vignettes: nut-brown
fishermen mending nets, veteran divers with fantastically photogenic faces nursing retsi-
nas between gazing nostalgically out to sea; and young islanders blithely marking time in
the garland of wharf-side kafenia . And while Pothia's whitewashed alleys might seem
little different from other towns, what makes it special is its past as Greece's sponge
diving capital; imagine the feats of bravery undertaken by these people time and again at
the bottom of the sea, to feed their families.
