Around Nisyros
The Volcano Το Ηφαίστειο
Nisyros sits on a volcanic fault line. The island originally culminated in a mountain of
850m, but the centre collapsed 30,000 to 40,000 years ago after three violent eruptions.
Their legacy are the white-and-orange pumice stones that can still be seen on the north-
ern, eastern and southern flanks of the island, and the large lava flow that covers the
whole southwest, around Nikea village.
The islanders call the volcano Polyvotis after the eponymous Titan who was im-
prisoned under the rock of Nisyros. Legend has it that during the battle between the gods
and Titans, Poseidon ripped a chunk off Kos and used it to trap the giant in the bowels of
the earth; today's volcano is his angered voice.
