Eating
The backstreets and waterfront are strung with cafes and tavernas. Ask for the island spe-
ciality, pitties (chickpea and onion patties), and wash them down with a refreshing
soumada, a nonalcoholic local beverage made from almond extract.
Cleanthis Taverna SEAFOOD $
(mains €8-12; ) Look for the octopus drying in the sun like an art installation, then fol-
low your nose to this lovely taverna. Apart from the live lobster gazing nostalgically
back at the nearby sea, there's an ocean of choice from shrimp souvlakia to fried cuttle-
fish, cod and octopus.
The calamari is caught locally and so perfectly chewy your jaw will ache with mastic-
ation.
