there might have been a Voyager 2 marker, moved progressively
towards and past them over the next 10 years to 1989.
Pluto would be on Cathkin Braes, where my father mas-
tered the game of golf in his youth. We thought it would be
fun to have two more circles elsewhere in the world, perhaps
in a municipal park in Vladivostok, marked 'Alpha Centauri,
property of Glasgow Parks Department.' But it's a sobering
thought that even on that scale, representing the Sun by a circle
40 ft across, the nearest star would be 40,000 miles away, off
Earth's surface altogether.
Nevertheless, if the Sighthill stone circle is renovated and
completed, the Astronomy and Space trail beckons next. If it were
to happen in Glasgow, it could be extended across the Central Belt
and into the Borders. There would be many visitor attractions to
