intended height, with the tops at adult eye level, and to install
a plaque explaining the circle. There was and still is nothing on
the site to identify the circle, saying who built it, to whom it's
dedicated or how it works, and after the initial affection of the
'Cuddies' nickname, by the twenty-first century the helicopter
operation had been forgotten and local legend attributed it to the
Druids. Supposedly local children were now afraid of it.
Originally we had planned to insert plaques into the surround-
ing paved walkway, with arrows pointing along the alignments and
wording, 'Stand here for midsummer sunrise,' etc. Gavin Roberts
had designed them and molds for the castings had been prepared,
but the work was not allowed to be completed. A later plan, put
forward by John Braithwaite and myself, was to use two of the
unused stones as outliers to mark sunrise and sunset at the equi-
noxes, and use the two others to support a plaque bearing Dave
McClymont's plan (Fig. 6.23 ), with a brief explanation as above.
