F IG . 9.4 Brainport Bay, near Minard, Loch Fyne (Photo by Chris Stanley,
1982)
As we flew west down the Clyde, coming back into sunlight,
'targets of opportunity' for Chris included a sunken freighter and a
nuclear submarine in a floating dry dock. I took some general shots
of the view as we crossed the Argyllshire hills. The main thing to
come out of them was that even before the overcast arrived, there
was a lot more haze in the atmosphere than was visible to the eye.
Given my inexperience, it was a relief when we found the
first target without difficulty. MacKie's request was for cover-
age of the shore site at Brainport Bay, near Minard, on Loch Fyne
(Fig. 9.4 ) , where there is a long alignment of modified natural boul-
ders (Figs. 9.5 and 9.7 ), plus two sighting stones that were found
with their wedging chips and had been re-erected in their sockets
(Figs. 9.6 and 9.7b ) . The line looks up the loch to the rising of the
Sun at the midsummer solstice.
